I used to have a couple Alpine Type-R 10" subs set up in a configuration similar to that, and they sounded just fine. I did notice that they sounded slightly better if I slightly opened the windows though, but I think that has more to do with interior volume of the cabin than it does with the direction the subwoofers face. I've currently got a single 10" Kenwood sub on the left hand side of the trunk, pointing into the trunk like that, and it sounds excellent. (The Alpines were overkill and then some.) You might want to check out some of the boxes available from tt.net member "ChrisZNA(Sacto, CA)". I personally like his new downward firing boxes. He's got some posts in classified click here).
